How This All Happened

A relatively decent, relatively recent picture of me from this summer, for reference. (More to come on my adventures in New Mexico, perhaps? Let me know if you’d be interested!)

Hello! You all may wonder what on earth I am doing – long story short, my dear friend Amanda and I went out for dinner last week, and as we were talking about my plans to study abroad this fall, she asked if I would be blogging my time over there. I said, “uhhh,” and she said, “you should!” Huh, I guess that wasn’t so long of a story. Let’s get started.

The name of this blog, “Wandering, Not Lost,” was inspired by a poem by J.R.R. Tolkien called “All that is gold does not glitter.” Those of you who know me well know that I love Lord of the Rings, and yes, it is a very nerdy reference, but I don’t care because it fits a travel blog perfectly (I’ll spare you any more details about this specific poem for now, but just know that I’d be happy to talk more about its significance if you’re interested). I’m very excited to share my “wanderings” with you all!

On to the basics. I assume you all know me, but just as a refresher: my name is Anne-Marie. I’m from Virginia, in the United States, and I am about to begin my third year of college – but this time, at the University of St. Andrews, in Scotland. I’m leaving in late August and coming back at the end of December. Even though I’m technically majoring in government, St. Andrews doesn’t have a government/political science department, so I’ll be taking a hodgepodge of classes that sound interesting/unique to the school/hopefully fulfill some minor requirements. I’m sure I’ll go into more detail later on another post, once I’ve officially signed up.

So why am I going to Scotland? My school has a pretty close relationship with St. Andrews (which made the application/decision easier), I know a couple people who go there, I’ve been doing Scottish dancing since I was 8, it’s got a great reputation, I’ve got family living on the same island, they speak English, the town is adorable, etc. Despite being a person who LOVES to plan, I tend to make big decisions pretty impulsively. Which probably isn’t the best habit, but it’s worked out well so far, especially in the past year, and it’s forced me to take risks which I never would have otherwise. Namely, deciding to move to a different continent for FOUR MONTHS. Like, Anne-Marie, what??? So yeah, I’m kind of terrified, but please don’t mention that fact to me because I don’t want to think about it. I applied and I got in and now I’m leaving for Scotland in less than two weeks and I’m taking all of y’all along on the adventure!

I don’t really know what to expect out of this blog. To start off with, my goal is to post once a week while I’m abroad. I don’t have a set day of the week or anything, so the easiest way to keep updated is to sign up to get email notifications (see below) whenever I write a new post. I’m also planning on posting on Instagram and to a lesser extent Facebook, so feel free to follow me on either of those platforms as well. Let me know if you have any suggestions for what I should cover in future posts, and feel free to tell anyone else about this blog who you think might be interested! Let’s get wandering!
